The history of the NYC subway and Helvetica

AIGA has written an informative and comprehensive history of New York’s famous subway signage, and it’s iconic use of type, particularly the world-famous Helvetica


Author Paul Shaw goes into great detail on the pre-1960s mishmash of mosaic and enamel signs, and the evolution of a graphic system still in use today that became a template for public signage all over the world.
